چکیده

A tall tower flux measurement setup was established in metropolitan Houston, Texas, to measure energy and trace gas fluxes from both anthropogenic and biogenic emission sources in the urban surface layer. We describe a new relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) system combined with a dual-channel GC-FID used for VOC flux measurements, focusing on benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) results. Ambient air sampled from 60 m above the ground next to a sonic anemometer is subsampled by a membrane pump and pushed into an REA valve system with two Teflon bag reservoirs, then transferred to the GC preconcentration units for thermal desorption. We discuss the performance of our system and the selected BTEX measurement results using approximately 7 weeks of data (June 1 – July 22, 2008), presenting diurnal variations of concentrations and fluxes of these traffic tracers. The measured values exhibited diurnal cycles with a dominant morning peak during weekdays related to rush-hour traffic and additional workday daytime flux maxima for toluene and xylenes. A two-way comparison with EPA National Emission Inventories (NEI) suggests potential underestimates in the NEI.

A comparison of new measurements of total monoterpene flux with improved measurements of speciated monoterpene flux

Many monoterpenes have been identified in forest emissions using gas chromatography (GC). Until now, it has been impossible to determine whether all monoterpenes are appropriately measured using GC techniques. We used a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) coupled with the eddy covariance (EC) technique to measure mixing ratios and fluxes of total monoterpenes above a ponderosa p...

Plant physiological influences on the fluxes of oxygenated volatile organic compounds from ponderosa pine trees

[1] Fluxes of oxygenated volatile organic compounds were measured above a ponderosa pine plantation, adjacent to the Blodgett Forest Research Station (38 53042.900N, 120 37057.900W, 1315 m elevation), with a fully automated relaxed eddy accumulation system coupled to a dual gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) system. These measurements were initially reported by Schade and Gold...

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) measurements of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere

During the MINOS campaign in August 2001 comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) was applied to the in situ measurements of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the Finokalia ground station, Crete. The measurement system employs a thermal desorption unit for on-line sampling and injection, and a GC×GC separation system equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID)...

Quantifying biogenic and anthropogenic contributions to acetone mixing ratios in a rural environment

Acetone was one of the most abundant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) observed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (California, USA). Mixing ratios were measured hourly above a ponderosa pine plantation using an automated in situ dual-channel GC-FID system throughout July 1997, from July through October 1998, and #uxes were measured with a relaxed eddy accumulator from July through September 1999. ...

Identification of Volatile Organic Compounds from Trichoderma virens (6011) by GC-MS and Separation of a Bioactive Compound via Nanotechnology

Fungal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have the potential of being used as biocontrol agents for biotechnological applications in agriculture, industry and medicine. In this research, different VOCs from secondary metabolites of biocontrol fungus Trichoderma virens (6011) KP671477 were separated using n-hexane, n-butanol and methanol solvents and identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrom...
